In the past I have done:
B is for Bluegrass
Attention 4th, 5th
& 6th graders ! Mrs.
Taylor will share B is for Bluegrass
in the library. Come have a
“Taste of Kentucky ”
with lots of great Kentucky made treats, hear
songs about people and places in Kentucky
and delve into some interesting trivia about our state. We will play Kentucky Bingo and win Kentucky made
prizes.
We read the book, had Ale 8, Harper's Country Ham and biscuits, Kentucky Kernal Pecans, and Dippin Dots (all KY products!). I gave away local honey, college keychains, etc as door prizes for a KY Bingo game families played together.
Fancy Nancy: I read the story aloud then placed families in groups.
1st group made accessories (crowns and bracelets)
2nd group coiffures-- braids with clips and ponytail holders with ribbons
3rd group had tea time with parfaits and eclairs
4th group had manicures
Families moved through the stations until everyone was finished.
39 Clues: Maze of Bones
39 clues agenda: (CLUES I
used are at the very bottom…they are very specific to our school building but
you could adapt)
Students signed up ahead of
time and I limited it to 20 kids and their parents (we have a huge Story Fest
with about 20 sessions to choose from so my numbers could be lower and easier
to manage)
Here is the note I put in the
flyer that was sent home about all of the sessions that were available…
Dear Long-Lost Cahill Relative,
It is time you know the truth. You are a member of the Cahill Family, the
most powerful family the world has ever known.
The secret of the Cahill’s power has been lost—hidden around HCES in the
form of the 39 Clues. Find the Clues and
immense power is yours !
Join Mrs. Taylor in the library to begin a scavenger hunt
throughout the school. (You must have an
adult with you to participate.) Watch a video introduction by author Rick
Riordan, participate in a scavenger hunt around the school and enjoy Dan’s
favorite junk foods! A prize package
will be awarded to the ultimate winner of the clue hunt.
We snacked on junk food since
it is mentioned in the series several times that Dan likes to snack..
While they ate, I showed
clips I found on Scholastic of Rick Riordan reading from the book. I showed clips #1-2-3-& 20 instead of the
entire video. Bookmark video of R.R.
When the video was over I
read aloud a few pages from Maze of Bones when the will is read and the hunt
begins….this lead to the kids figuring out the first clue was under their seat. This started the scavenger hunt that lead
around the whole school. I made sure to
send each group to a different beginning place with their first clue so they
weren’t all bunched up and fighting (I know…not like the book but I couldn’t
have that now could I?)
My favorite clue was one I
wrote in invisible ink that could only be read under a black light…found the
pen on the internet and set the black light up in a corner of the library…they
all had to return with it before continuing to the next place.
I had about an hour with
4-5-6th grade kids and parents.
I had placed the first clue
under the chairs so I made sure I had assigned seats so everyone was placed in
a branch of the family. I had the crests
from each branch on a placemat in the middle of the table and they were color
coded. The clues were color coded around
the building and each team had a number….so they had to make it back to the
library with the right color and numbered clue….(at each spot there would be a
4 red clues numbered 1-2-3-4…if you were team 3 you could only take clue #3)
Color code teams and
clues…all clues are numbered and color coded so teams can sabotage each other
Madrigal black
Lucian red
Tomas blue
Ekat yellow
Janus green
Each child had a canvas bag
with paper, pencil and crayons. (one of the clues required them to get a
rubbing from a plaque outside of a classroom door)
Here are my notes…some are suggestions from others
when I was planning the event….
Prizes: $10 gift card, $10 book fair certificate,
Frisbee, book, ink pen, candy
Snacks: Ice
Cream, chips, skittles (mentioned in Maze of Bones)
They eat some kind of bread thing in Paris in Book #1. ?? Skull candy
left over from Halloween?
For snacks, try food from the
various counties they visit. Prizes could be a stamp in a passport.
about how many
pieces are in the "smarties"? or snack size M&M's?
Actually a roll of Smarties would be a fun prize! or the Nestle chocolate that looks like a treasure chest... I can't remember the exact name of it. They are individually wrapped pieces and VERY yummy!

Wisdom was not at the top
Of the graduate school mountain,
But there in the sandpile at Sunday school.
These are the things I learned:
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life -
Learn some and think some
And draw and paint and sing and dance
And play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world,
Watch out for traffic,
Hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.

GAME NIGHT: Salt in His Shoes
Calling all sports fans !
Join Mrs. Taylor in the library for a
fun-filled evening. We will read an inspiring story about Michael
Jordan’s basketball success while enjoying snacks & drinks. After our book, we will make sports themed crafts,
play games, answer sports trivia and have a book swap. (Mrs. Taylor will give
you details about the book swap.)
We read the story, had popcorn and soda, made basketball keychains, used KYVL to answer trivia questions about Michael Jordan and had a book swap. We talked about trying and not giving up...I gave each family directions on how to play Mancala. They read the directions and tried to play...those that struggled asked for help from others and we discussed teamwork.
Casey at Bat
We read Casey at Bat, had a Book Swap, had crakerjacks and sodas, made baseball bracelets or bookmarks.
